The National
Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS was launched in Mahatma Gandhiji’s Birth
Centenary year, 1969. Aimed at developing a student’s personality through
community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges,
Universities and at +2 levels working for a campus-community linkage. The
the cardinal principle of the NSS Programme is that it is organized by the students
themselves, and both students and teachers through their combined participation
in community service, gets a sense of involvement in the tasks of nation
building.
Aim of NSS:
‘Overall
personality development of the student volunteer through Community Service’.
Objectives
behind the NSS:-
Enable the
students to understand the community in which they work.
Understand
themselves with their community.
To identify the needs and problems in
the community for the solution of which they can be
involved.
To develop among themselves a sense of
social and civic responsibility.
To apply their education in finding
a practical solution to individual and community problems.
To develop competence required for group
living and sharing responsibilities.
To Gain skills in
mobilizing community participation.
To acquire leadership qualities and
democratic attitude.
To develop the capacity to meet emergencies
and national disasters.
To practice national integration
Programmes
in NSS:
The
the main intention of NSS Programmes is to change the Attitude of Volunteer through
various activities within the Institution and Society. The Ministry has framed
the following NSS Programmes to give Life Skills Education to the Volunteers.
Regular Activities
Special Camping Programmes
Other Programmes (University
level only)
Regular Activities:
The
Programme Officer has to conduct these activities within the Institution 240 hours
in a year. There is a misconception that Sramadhanam, Plantation, Blood
Donation and AIDS Awareness are only Regular Activities. But the NSS
Programmes Officer can also conduct the other Regular Activities as per the
Academic background of the Volunteers. The Regular Activities should cover
Communication Skills, Career Counseling, and Passport taking formalities,
Abroad Education information, Placement Information, Legal Awareness, Law and Order,
Global Warming, Supporting to Government Programmes, Health and Hygiene. These Programmes
should be conducted besides identified activities of the Ministry of Youth
Affairs & Sports. If we conduct these Programmes even now NSS Volunteers
are also attracted towards NSS. The main intention of these Programmes is to
identify sincere, disciplined and talented Volunteers for State and National
Level Programme.
Note:
In addition to
the above Tasks & Targets, the Programme Coordinators have to ensure the
implementation/execution of other activities such as the creation of tangible
assets during the 6 Special Camping
Programme [Repairs/Formation of Approach Roads, Construction of Low Cost
Toilets, Water Harvesting Pits, Construction/Repairs of Check Dams, Bus
Shelters, Mass Awareness Campaigns on various social and educational issues
(need-based), Technology Transformation, Vocational Training to the Rural Youth
etc].The Programme Coordinators also to ensure the conduct of Skill
Development Programmes to the NSS volunteers during Regular & Special
Camping Programmes. All Important Days that are fallen in every month
should invariably be observed/celebrated by the NSS volunteers in a
befitting manner. Ensure the involvement of Local Public Representatives in
the NSS Programmes and get wide publicity for the NSS programme through
Print & Electronic Media. All the NSS activities as mentioned above should
be Monetized (in terms of the worth of Rupees) and send those details along with
periodical reports to the NSS Cell of your University. Further, the Programme
Coordinators have to implement/carry out the programme/activities that are
decided by the Government and communicated from time to time.
Special Camping
Programme:
The Prime aim of
Special Camp is that the Volunteers should become good citizens by learning the
life skills in the Special Camping Programme. They have to learn friendly
an adjusting attitude, Tolerance, Dignity of Labour, Significance of Health,
Inherent Skills importance, Communication Skills, Leadership Qualities,
Personal Discipline, SocietyConcern, etc. Besides attitude Change, the
Programme Officers should identify the talented and skilled Volunteers for
University, State, National, International Level Programmes. Special Camp is
conducted for 7 days and the sanctioned amount is Rs. 22,500/-. There are six
activities to be executed, to bring the change in the attitude of the Volunteers.
